What each skincare packaging component costs
Reference prices per piece at 10,000 pcs, FOB China, undecorated. These are the four components that make up most skincare SKUs — the secondary packaging is where brands either save or overspend.
| Component | Unit price @ 10k |
|---|---|
| PP cream jar | $0.22 – $0.40 |
| Acrylic cream jar | $0.75 – $1.30 |
| Glass cream jar | $0.60 – $1.00 |
| PET serum bottle | $0.18 – $0.32 |
| Glass dropper bottle | $0.55 – $0.95 |
| Airless pump bottle | $1.10 – $1.90 |
| Folding carton | $0.22 – $0.40 |
| Rigid gift box | $0.42 – $0.75 |
How the set price is built
Skincare packaging is costed component by component, then assembled. The estimator sums the parts, adjusts for fill size and run length, and keeps tooling as a separate line.
Why a full set is cheaper than buying the pieces separately
Because the components end up in the same carton. When the jar, bottle and box come from one supplier, they are packed as a set in one operation, one carton, one shipment. Sourcing them separately means three MOQs, three production schedules, three freight bookings and a packing step you have to organise yourself — usually 15–25% more in total, even when the per-piece prices look lower.
Jar or bottle — what actually decides it
The formula decides it. Creams, balms and butters go in jars because they are too viscous to pump. Serums, essences and oils go in bottles with a dropper. Anything with actives that oxidise — vitamin C, retinol, azelaic acid — should go in an airless pump, which is why that component costs three to five times a simple PET bottle and carries a 10,000 pcs MOQ.
Where brands overspend on secondary packaging
A rigid box adds $0.20–$0.35 over a folding carton and roughly doubles the packed volume, so freight rises too. It pays back on gift sets and premium retail, and rarely pays back on a single-SKU serum sold online. If the box is only there for unboxing content, a printed sleeve over a folding carton gets most of the effect for a third of the cost.
Skincare packaging questions
How much does a skincare packaging set cost?
A basic PP jar + PET bottle + folding carton set lands around $0.70–$1.10 per set at 10,000 pcs. A standard acrylic jar + glass dropper bottle + rigid box set runs $1.55–$2.90. A premium glass + airless set starts near $2.20 and goes up with decoration.
Should I use a jar or a bottle?
Consistency decides it. Creams and balms need a jar because they cannot be pumped. Serums and oils need a dropper bottle for dosing. Actives that oxidise — vitamin C, retinol — need an airless pump to avoid contact with air and light.
Why is an airless pump so much more expensive?
It is a multi-part assembly: outer body, inner piston, pump engine and actuator, all with tight tolerances so the dose is consistent and the product does not touch air. That engineering is why it costs $1.10–$1.90 against $0.18–$0.32 for a plain PET bottle, and why MOQ is 10,000 rather than 3,000.
What MOQ applies to skincare packaging?
3,000 pcs for PP jars, PET bottles and cartons; 5,000 for acrylic jars and glass; 10,000 for airless pumps. Because a set is limited by its scarcest component, an airless set inherits the 10,000 MOQ even if the jar itself could run at 3,000.
Can the jar and bottle share the same decoration?
Yes, and they usually should — matching frost level, logo placement and colour reference is what makes a set read as one brand. But they are separate processes: jars are usually sprayed or hot stamped, bottles are silk screened or labelled, so expect separate set-up charges for each.
How long from artwork to delivery?
Allow 7–10 days for sampling and artwork approval, then 20–25 days production for PP and PET, 25–38 days for acrylic, glass and airless. A full set ships when the slowest component is ready, so plan around the airless pump rather than the carton.
